Online, I spend a lot of time tormenting people I think are fools.
I wonder about this. This is truly a waste of my time, I could be spending my time in much better more productive ways that would improve my lot to be sure.
Somehow though it really irks me when people are assholes.
I don’t consider myself especially smart. Certainly, I’m not smarter than the next guy. I may write well but it isn’t as if I don’t have shortcomings and I’m far, far away from perfect.
Thing is, I don’t think many of us are up to that standard and I have a real problem when people use some imagined trait as a means to hold themselves over others.
I just want to drag them down into the gutter. Why?
Because we’re all really animals. Call it what you will, dress us up, put the trappings of civilization around us but time after time when you get right down to it you see the evidence clearly that something is just so intrinsically hard wired into out primate brains and we still have a long, long way to go to escape that.
So, when people want to pretend they’re something more to elevate themselves over others just like the monkey I am I am compelled to fling my shit at them.
The case in point is that they’re a bunch of people on a site I frequent who are people of faith. I don’t particularly have a great love for holy rollers either but if they’re not bothering anyone else and their faith provides them with comfort then who am I to question that or deride them for that.
Yet, they’re a bunch of clowns who feel compelled to do just that, regularly. Day in day out and you know it’s really clear they’re older people for the most part who have arrived at some juncture in life where they need to take out their unhappiness on others.
I feel that too and they’re a convenient target so I take out my unhappiness on them for a good purpose.
What’s often funny to me is watching them cry like the wounded party when they’re subjected to the very same behavior they dish out on a regular basis. I am nothing if not unrelenting when it comes to stuff like this, about the only thing living with my old man did for me was to teach me how to weather any insult and thrown back one even more staggering.
It’s more than a little funny to watch them fall, one by one.
I mean I know I’m just evil.
Evil is the default setting. Trying to be good, kind, polite, giving... that’s always the challenge. It’s the voice in my head from my mom but then there’s the other voice, the animal. What’s funny is when people get pushy or nasty and they confuse being nice for weakness and then act surprised when they see it isn’t weakness at all.
You see this in the city quite a bit at times, people just being oblivious to simple niceties. It’s funny to watch.
So, when I started this it was at a point when I was frequenting the Yahoo comments and thankfully they shut that down completely.
There was a thread where people regularly came to torment other people who they thought were overly or overtly religious.
I’m not overly religious BY ANY MEANS... I mean I’m likely the antithesis of that. I’m the guy who fully expects the divine lightening bolt to come down and strike me should I dare cross the threshold of any church or other holy site.
I’ve never liked bullies though.
The great thing about the Yahoo boards was ultimately in every instance I was able to get so deeply under the skin of one asshole or another that they gave up. Oh, they tried, believe me they tried to get under my skin but I had a lifetime of dealing with a bully in my old man and it left me in the very unique position of being particularly tough when it came to dealing with a bully.
And then again, there was the thing my sainted mother once told me, “Philip, don’t take any shit from anyone.”
Yeah, really... that’s true. That was my mom.
My mom was really a holy roller, she was big on the whole Jesus thing in a big way. So much so there were times I was like... “C’MON!”
But, as long as people are being an ass about the religion thing I don’t like to see them being picked on so I can be an evil dick. I always think of that as my default position and thinking on it now that was one of the reasons I started on that Pulp Fiction entry awhile back because being an evil dick for some of us is easy but it doesn’t mean we aren’t trying to be better when we can.
